It’s been 1 year and three months since I put a jersey on my body.  My body and mind are back in shape after my injury in January 2012. So in February, Arnette sunglasses put on a local Pro event at Seaside Reef and I was thinking this is a great challenge to push myself against some of the established and up and coming pro surfers from so cal again. The waves were in the waist-high range, so I pulled out an old 5’8” Marlin Bacon shaped Cali quad to help me with speed in rolling waves off the reef. Putting the jersey on in the first heat brought an easy smile to my face but in the back of my head I was feeling unsure of my surfing ability and competition skills. I don’t remember too much from my heats but I had a good first heat, then loosened up in the 2nd heat, felt strong in my 3rd heat and before I knew it I was in the final and feeling in the zone. By the time final buzzer finished, I had won the final and claimed my last ride all the way to the beach and was frothed up by my good friend Jeremy Sherwin and my parents on the beach.  I feel proud of myself to have pushed through the whole event and it made for a special win at the wave that has shaped my surfing.
